Set during a period of political unrest and persecution, the final entry in Feather's 16th-century Kiss trilogy (following To Kiss a Spy) will hook readers at the outset, but it may not hold their attention throughout. When Lady Philippa Nielson meets Lionel Ashton, a close confidant of Queen Mary and King Philip II, she has the eerie sense that she's met the mysterious English lord before. Lionel denies the connection, but the more time she spends with him, the more convinced she becomes. As Pippa's friendship with Lionel grows, her relationship with her husband, Stuart, deteriorates. She suspects he's having an affair, but it isn't until she learns she's pregnant that she discovers the truth: both she and Stuart are pawns in a plot to secure Queen Mary's place on the throne, and Lionel, whom Pippa has come to trust and even love, may be one of the Queen's puppeteers. Feather skillfully draws out the intrigue and immerses readers in the time period with her descriptions of court costumes and customs. However, her tendency to overstuff the novel with details undermines the suspense. Though the pace plods at times and the secondary romance between Pippa's brother and Lionel's Spanish ward lacks depth, Feather's firm grasp of history and compelling plot will push readers past the slow spots. A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of M.M. Kaye’s epic novel of love and war. M.M. As he forgets his true identity, his destiny is set...A story of divided loyalties and fierce friendship; of true love made impossible by class and race; a critique of the imperialist adventure; and an examination of the cultural and spiritual clash between East and West, ‘The Far Pavilions’ is a searing insight into the human heart. In his first series, Miles Jupp is in the chair for eight episodes of BBC Radio 4's ever-popular topical comedy show. The News Quiz,'the finest topical comedy panel game known to radio', has been providing headlines, punchlines and a sharply satirical take on the news since it first aired in 1977. In these eight episodes, the players include regulars such as Mark Steel, Susan Calman, Jeremy Hardy, Samira Ahmed and Lucy Porter as well as newer panellists including Danny Finkelstein, Sarah Kendall, Emily Ashton, Elis James and Sara Pascoe. They dissect issues diverse and diverting, including Jeremy Corbyn, Lord Ashcroft's biography of David Cameron, the 5p charge for plastic bags, the Rugby World Cup and Playboy's cover-up. There's also the usual selection of funny cuttings sent in by listeners, read by newsreaders Neil Sleat, Kathy Clugston, Susan Rae and Diana Speed. New boy Miles Jupp is in the chair following the retirement of Sandi Toskvig from the show in June 2015, making him the fifth host in the show's 38-year history. 1. Language: English.
